Cleaning & Repair

Cleaning and Repair

Stored in ideal conditions (cool and dry), video tapes should last decades. However, tapes stored in less than ideal conditions tend to deteriorate over time. I typically encounter brittleness and mold, both of which make playing and converting tapes much harder.

Pricing

  • Repair Fee: as low as $5 per tape, depending on the repair
  • Cleaning Fee: as low $5 per tape, depending on how dirty

Please inspect your tape prior to dropping them off. Anything I encounter that is in need of repair or cleaning, I will assume that you want me to do so and the appropriate fees will be accessed.

Repair

Often brittleness is the cause of most repair needs. Breaks often occur where the tape connects to the spools. Breaks and other issues also occur mid tape – where you may have had an old VCR “chew” up a tape resulting in crinkling or breaks. Maybe the inner mechanisms are broken or in need of lubrication.

While some repairs will return the tape to normal working order, others cannot be completely remedied. My goal is those situations is the get the tape repaired enough that it can be converted.

Cleaning

Mold and dirt can be a major problem with tapes, especially those stored in wet, warm conditions. They will still play, but you will likely encounter quality issues. You will also be intruducing mold and dirt into your player which will junk up the heads, thus affect the quality of other tapes.

I can clean mold and dirt from your tapes with a special machine. The inner spools are removed from the tape and run through a machine that removes the mold and dirt. Then tape housing is also cleaned with rubbing alcohol prior to replacing the spools.
